Multi-asset investors need to understand the underlying single asset classes in which multi-asset portfolios invest. While the deep expertise required for security selection in each asset class is typically delegated to single asset class portfolio managers, multi-asset investors need to understand the return and risk characteristics of each asset class, their potential rewards and perils, their interactions with each other and their roles in the overall portfolio. Only with this understanding of each asset class can a multi-asset portfolio be constructed. Often, when multi-asset class portfolio managers discuss their portfolios with clients, an understanding of all asset classes is expected.
