Trees: Delivering Productive and Sustainable Farming Systems: An Update

Abstract

Despite much progress, huge problems remain with billions of people still suffering from land degradation, food insecurity and poverty. While nearly half agricultural land has 10% tree cover, the area which can be described as “intensified agroforestry” is minute. This emphasizes the potential for dramatic improvement to replace conventional intensive agriculture in the tropics with a more appropriate low-input and more sustainable system, based on rebuilding agroecological functions and the creation of new sources of income.
