Section 6. A Bottom-Up Approach
A unique feature of this study has been the development of a participatory approach, linked to community capacity building, to empower local smallholder farmers to develop new crops from the forest trees, which prior to deforestation used to produce food and non-food products of day-to-day importance. This self-help process creates an incentive to overcome food and nutritional insecurity and generate income from agroforestry practices. A review of the biological, environmental, social and commercial components of the strategies and techniques has found that the outcomes and expected future impacts indicate that this approach has very successfully improved the livelihoods of poor smallholder farming communities. ...
