A unique feature of this study has been the development of a participatory approach, linked to community capacity building, to empower local smallholder farmers to develop new crops from the forest trees, which prior to deforestation used to produce food and non-food products of day-to-day importance. This self-help process creates an incentive to overcome food and nutritional insecurity and generate income from agroforestry practices.
