In 1997, the first paper presented here recognized that the three main determinants for overcoming rural poverty in Africa were (1) reversing soil fertility depletion, (2) intensifying and diversifying land use with high-value products, and (3) providing an enabling policy environment for the smallholder farming sector. So far in this book we have seen that agroforestry practices can improve food production in a sustainable way through their contribution to soil fertility replenishment, and that the large untapped resource of high-value trees can make farming systems both ecologically more stable and economically more rewarding, while improving food security.
