Preface

José-M. Lagarón

The current book intends to review the latest developments in the functionalization of high performance plastic materials for food packaging applications. Various polymers, biopolymers and their composites ‘reinforced’ with various organic, inorganic or hybrid engineered nano- or biomaterials, are described which help ensure, or even enhance, the quality and safety of packaged foods. Extending the shelf-life of foods has become of primary interest across the food chain in order to facilitate logistics during production, handling, storage, transportation, presentation by the retailer and even disposal, and to avoid substantial losses due to the deterioration of packaged food quality and safety.
