Rhythmic Notation

As well as signifying the pitch, note symbols also denote the duration of each note. These symbols are identical to those learned in Chapter 4. For note values with tails, there are particular conventions regarding the direction of the tails. Notes above the middle line of the staff have the tails pointing downward, while notes below the middle line of the staff have their tails pointed upward. Notes on the middle line can be pointing up or down. See Figure 5.13.
