The Augmented Triad

Another strange-sounding triad outside of the common chord category is the augmented triad. You’ll find augmented triads on degree III of the harmonic minor scale and degrees III and IV of the rising melodic minor scale. The distinctive feature of the augmented triad is that it is built up from two major thirds. Figure 17.6 shows its relationship to the major triad. It is like a major triad except the fifth has been sharpened by a semitone.
