The seven modes as shown all occur on the white keys of the keyboard. But they can also be used in any other key. This means that there are 84 (12 × 7) modal possibilities to contend with. Usually these are referred to by name, with the addition of a prefix indicating the key. Consequently, F# Dorian means the Dorian mode in the key of F#. Bb Locrian means the Locrian mode in the key of Bb, and so on. Should you want to work out a particular mode in a particular key, you will find the table in Figure 20.9 helpful.
