Be networked

The organizational paradox of networking is very simple: most steam-engine organizations believe that they are networking, but they are not. This is because they have a fundamental misunderstanding of what a network is and of what “networking” means.

Steam-engine organizations operate, and think, in very linear terms. Raw materials come in at one end of the system, are processed into something that has greater value, and are shipped out at the other end. The organization itself operates on the basis of secrecy, control, and rigid hierarchy: it actively sets out to build high walls around itself.
