What is Copyright?

Copyright is a form of protection provided to “original works of authorship,” such as books, movies, songs, photographs, software, and other intellectual works. These works are generally protected by copyright the moment they are fixed in a tangible form of expression. Subject to certain exceptions, the author of a copyrighted work has exclusive rights in the work, meaning he or she is the only person who can reproduce, perform, sell, give away, or adapt the copyrighted work. Ideas, slogans, titles, typeface, systems, procedures, and works that contain no original authorship are not eligible for copyright protection.
