Chapter 4

Fluid Mechanics

Abstract

Fluid mechanics is the study of fluid behavior (liquids, gases, blood, and plasmas) at rest and in motion. Fluid mechanics has a wide range of applications in mechanical and chemical engineering, in biological systems, and in astrophysics. In this chapter fluid mechanics and its application in biological systems are presented and discussed. First the fluid mechanics governing equations and blood properties are explained. In the following section different models for blood as a non-Newtonian fluid are presented. In addition, the blood flow in three important parts of human cardiovascular system, arteries, vein, and capillaries, is studied and the equations are presented. Finally pulsatile blood flow in the body ...
