9.1 Introduction

We have had the opportunity to speak about biomolecules and biological sensors several times in preceding chapters because, when we are dealing with physical or chemical sensors, biological phenomena invariably enter the discussion owing to their supreme importance, e.g., we treated protein, protease and maltose sensors in Sections 6.11.1–6.11.3, we described the role of sensors in DNA, protein, virus and protein activity analysis in Sections 7.5.1–7.5.4, and we discussed sensors and tumor marker detection in Section 7.8.5.
