Nanoshells*

Abstract

Nanoshells are important for cancer and spectroscopic applications. The method of synthesis of nanoshells is quite simple and includes one-step and two-step approaches. There are two types of nanoshells: oxide nanoshells (e.g., hollow silica nanoshells) and metal nanoshells (e.g., gold and silver nanoshells). The coating of colloidal particles with shells offers a simple and flexible way of modifying their surface, chemical, reactive, thermal (lower melting point due to large surface area), optical, magnetic (silica as coating inert materials), and catalytic properties (e.g., CdSe nanoparticles coated with CdS or ZnTe and CdTe nanoparticles coated with CdSe). The most significant applications of nanoshells include ...
