Introduction

The U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) defines “nanoscience” as “research to discover new behaviors and properties of materials with dimensions at the nanoscale, which ranges roughly from 1 to 100 nanometers (nm).” A key objective of nanotechnology is to develop materials, devices, and systems with fundamentally different properties by exploiting the unique properties of molecular and supramolecular systems at the nanoscale.
