Cancer occurs when an overproliferation of abnormal cells harms the host by growing into a body system or by robbing the body of nutrients. Cancer happens more often in men than women and ranks second to cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in the United States. African-Americans who have cancer usually have a lower five-year survival rate than whites.

The cancer cells that develop have invasive qualities that allow them to access the lymph nodes and blood vessels. This quality gives the cancer cells the capability to travel.
