Pregnancy is a special time in a woman’s life. Considered a normal state of health, most cultures believe that the woman is well. This belief might cause the client to refuse to visit the doctor. Studies have shown that good prenatal care can reduce the incidence of infant mortality and improve pregnancy outcome. This chapter focuses on the health needs of the obstetric client and the newborn infant. This chapter also covers methods of birth control, prenatal care, and diseases affecting women. After reviewing this chapter, the nurse should be able to answer commonly asked questions and provide teaching for the client and family.
