Safe nursing practice requires knowledge of the practice and legal boundaries of the registered nurse, the licensed practical nurse, and the nursing assistant.
The state boards of nursing are responsible for ensuring that those licensed to practice nursing are safe practitioners and that they abide by approved standards of nursing practice. Practicing nurses, physicians, consumers, as well as an attorney and an executive officer appointed by the governor of the state, generally make up the state boards of nursing.
