Chapter Nine. Care of the Client with Gastrointestinal Disorders
The gastrointestinal (GI) system begins with the mouth and ends with the anus. It is approximately 25 feet in length in the adult. The primary functions of the GI system are food digestion, extraction of nutrients, and waste elimination. Parts of the GI tract include
• Mouth
• Esophagus
• Stomach
• Small and large intestine
• Salivary glands
• Liver
• Gallbladder
• Pancreas
