The explicitly apologetic passages of the Pensées do not appear until Pascal undertakes an examination of the ‘Proofs of Jesus Christ,’ which he bases on the Scriptures. The Old Testament foreshadows ‘son attente’ – ‘the wait for Him’; the New Testament presents ‘son modèle’ – ‘His model’; and both Testaments construed together take Christ as ‘leur centre’ – ‘their center.’

Although the brief text entitled ‘Le Mystère de Jésus’ – ‘The Mystery of Jesus’ – has been included in the Pensées since the first edition of 1670, there is reason to believe that Pascal conceived of it as an independent statement, an integral text that would stand alone.
