When Mark Funkhouser was elected mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, his wife, Gloria Squitiro, who was also his former campaign manager, began working in a small desk next to his office as his personal assistant. Although Squitiro was working for free, her role of personal assistant to the mayor was not well received by the city hall employees. As a consequence, a “volunteer ordinance” was adopted banning relatives from working in the city hall on a regular basis.
