Occasionally, it becomes necessary to use serial interfaces between routers when no actual circuit exists. Suppose you're testing a theory in a lab environment. You don't need to pay for a T1 just to confirm that part of your design will work. Or maybe you are caught in need of a router with two LAN interfaces, one for multiaccess and the other as a backbone to another router, but the spare you have has only one such interface.
