Chapter 3. Ethernet/IEEE 802.3
Ethernet refers to the family of local-area networks (LANs) covered by the IEEE 802.3 standard. This standard also defines what is commonly known as the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detect (CSMA/CD) protocol.
The Xerox Corporation Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) developed the original Ethernet as an experimental coaxial-cable network in the 1970s. This Ethernet operated with a data rate of 3 megabits per second (Mbps) using a carrier sense multiple access collision detect (CSMA/CD) protocol for LANs, and was designed for networks with intermittent heavy traffic requirements.
