The previous chapters focused on network functions virtualization (NFV) concepts, architecture, and deployment. Software-defined networking (SDN) is a different technology area that is independent of NFV. However, since its goals align very well with those of NFV, the two technologies complement and benefit from each other, bringing a very compelling solution to achieve the common desired results. A discussion about NFV would be incomplete unless it includes SDN. This chapter touches upon SDN, introduces its concepts at a high level, and explores the benefits it brings when combined with NFV.
