Appendix D. Discovering Device Behavior
Effective troubleshooting is difficult at best if your knowledge of the expected behavior of your network infrastructure devices is unknown. Knowing how to determine the operating behavior without access to the device console is therefore an important skill. Furthermore, it is a useful skill for verifying that the configuration has been implemented properly by the device. When the network is operating correctly this is rarely a concern, but when it is not operating correctly it is not safe to trust anything (such as theoretical expected behavior, behavior according to the configuration, and behavior reported by a device that might be marginal or failed).
