Liaison and library buildings

Librarian of Girton College, Cambridge, Frances Gandy, demonstrates the critical importance of liaison skills in the project management and design of a new library building. Bringing the Duke Library Building to fruition in 2005 involved her in liaison conversations not only with academic, administrative and library staff, but also with architects, finance committees, fundraisers, donors, alumni and the builders themselves. This case study explores her experience and showcases the ways in which her significant liaison and organisational skills have worked together to achieve a superbly pleasing library building which has the distinction of being essentially designed by librarians.
