Harby’s poster for a gallery exhibition of one of his
country’s most recognizable artists has a decidedly
modern twist. Kalhor is a well-known Iranian
calligrapher. Creating an “encounter between modern
design and Kalhor’s old-fashioned personality is illogical
to the viewer” and challenging to held notions.

This piece for artist Parham Tagihoff’s exhibit always
makes Harby smile, who notes, “Most people think
this is the shape of a pineapple, although in reality it
is that of an eye.” Intersecting Farsi and English
copy at dramatic angles provides tension. As for
color, Harby says his original plan was for red, “but I
changed it to silver on press for greater impact.”

It is amazing the impact that can be achieved with
simple objects available at the local store. When
Harby was given the subject violence for his submission
to the prestigious Mons exhibit in Belgium, he
looked to an odd source—the home furnishing store
IKEA. “This photo is of a wooden doll that I purchased
at IKEA and used to signify a cultural attack.”
The off-center typography, dramatic lighting, and
stark black and white printing combine to form
an arresting image.

For this self-promotional piece in magenta and black,
Harby set out to express clarity and instead leaves
the viewer with ambiguity. The digital fingerprint
motif is meant to convey a sense of identity, but
Harby notes, “Most people think I have taken a certain
direction in my life, but I really don’t know.” This
uncertainty is reflected in the confused shapes
operating in a mazelike fashion on the fingerprint.

For a gallery exhibition, Harby decided to explore his
city, Tehran, and its growth into something he hopes
will blossom into much more. When he describes
this “caterpillar” image as his interpretation of
his hometown, it is obvious he views it in the
cocoon stage.

Visual problem solving comes easily to Harby, as
in his striking interpretation of the political struggles
of Palestine. However, designing in English has its
limitations on occasion. “I was unable to properly
express my viewpoint in the English text” that
ended up on the final poster, says Harby. He may be
disappointed, but he does not give nearly enough
credit to his visual articulation.
