HANDLING A RUNNING STORY
A running story is one that continues to yield copy edition by edition throughout the day, and sometimes through several days. Handling it is the supreme test of a cool sub. It is so-called because it involves a continuous process of editing, revising and re-headlining the material, and often revising the layout, right up to the last press time of the last edition. It is a job for an experienced subeditor because of its speed and complexity, although a modest three- or four-paragraph story given to the newest sub on the table can turn into a running story and unexpectedly provide a career baptism of fire.
