Chapter 5. Mapping the Model to the Database

In this chapter, we will discuss the various methods that exist to map a domain model to an underlying database. We will discover that, on one hand, the more we follow conventions, the less we have to code or define, and on the other hand, the more flexibility we want, the more effort we have to invest in the mapping.

In this chapter, we shall:

  • Get a clear understanding about what mapping is and what it is needed for
  • Discuss in detail four of the most commonly used mapping techniques
  • Define and implement conventions to reduce the coding effort
  • Automatically create scripts to create a database schema from our mappings
  • Define the mapping for our ordering system domain model

Ok then, let's dive into the details. ...
