One of the reasons that this chapter is included in the book, rather than just launching into applications, is that, being a complete system, there are some aspects of NLP that underpin any and every activity that we use it for. Many tools and techniques have been modelled and developed over four decades, but initially these pillars were all the founders had to work from. They still hold true today.
