The meta-model is the heart of NLP. It was the first model, developed when the founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, modelled successful therapists Virginia Satir 112 and Fritz Perls. They observed that certain types of question had a therapeutic effect. These were summarised into 12 language patterns in the first NLP book, The Structure of Magic in 1975. 113
