State management is called self management under emotional intelligence (EI) frameworks. It is defined under EI as, ‘The ability to remain in control despite our emotional state.’ In the world of NLP, however, we prefer to refer to it as, ‘The ability to control our emotions so that they do not control us.’ The difference is that in NLP we choose to change our state once we have become aware of it being detrimental to desired outcome, rather than trying to control our anger, for example.
