An alien observer may reasonably conclude that conversation is simply taking it in turns to talk, though I have witnessed ‘discussions’ with everyone talking at the same time. The most important part of conversation, however, is usually listening, not talking. Listening is more than hearing. Under stress, people’s hearing improves but listening diminishes. We are mostly poor at listening, and have a number of natural obstacles to overcome in order to improve.
