Predicting the effect of stitching on the mechanical properties and damage of non-crimp fabric composites: finite element analysis
D.S. Ivanov, S.V. Lomov and I. Verpoest, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
Abstract:
The stitching of unidirectional (UD) plies distorts and crimps the fibres and, inevitably, compromises the properties of the final part. Mesoanalysis, overviewed in this chapter, aims at prediction of the effect of stitching on mechanical performance, i.e stiffness, damage initiation threshold, stiffness degradation, non-elastic deformations, and strength. Various representative volumes and boundary conditions for modelling are discussed. The results are compared with the experiments described in Chapter 11.
