Nonparametric procedures are appropriate alternatives for small data sets
or when interval or ratio data do not meet the assumptions necessary for
parametric statistics. At the same time, small samples make nonparametric
statistics less powerful than parametric statistics, particularly in situations
where data meet the normality assumption. Nonparametric procedures are
often thought to be simpler than their parametric counterparts.
