Chapter 9 Booting and Runlevels

In this chapter, you’ll learn about the boot process employed by Novell Linux Desktop. You will also see the steps involved when a user logs on to the system, as well as the full cycle from boot to daily operation. After looking at that process, each of the elements will be examined individually.

Walking Through a Normal Boot

Assuming that there are no problems with the system, the following steps walk through the boot process from start to finish:

1. When any machine is started, it first does a Power On Self Test (POST) to verify that internal parts and processes are working. This occurs regardless of any operating system.
