OLLUTION
World Health Organization (WHO) defines air pollution
as ‘the contamination of the indoor or outdoor environ-
ment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that
modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.’
This definition encompasses a wide range of pollut-
ants, including gases like sulphur dioxide (SO
2
), nitrogen
oxides (NO
x
), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O
3
), as
well as particulate matter (PM), both PM10 and PM2.5
(particulates with diameters of 10 micrometers and 2.5
micrometers, respectively).
