Ram Manohar Lohia (1910–68)

INTRODUCTION

Indian politician and activist who was a leading figure in socialist politics and the Indian independence movement. His life was spent fighting injustice by developing an Indian version of socialism. At the age of 19, he went to Germany for higher studies and to obtain a Ph.D. in economics on the topic ‘Salt Taxation in India’ focusing on M. K. Gandhi’s socio-economic theory. He returned to India in 1933 and got involved in the national movement. He joined Congress Socialist Party (formed in 1934), a socialist group within Congress.
