Nationalism

INTRODUCTION

Nationalism is an idea and movement that holds that nations should be congruent with the state. As a movement, nationalism tends to promote the interest of a particular nation, especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation’s sovereignty over its homeland to create a nation-state. Nationalism has been called the religion of the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries. As a way of thinking about the world, it emphasizes the importance of nations in explaining historical developments and analyzing contemporary politics and claims that ‘national character’ is a pervasive factor differentiating human beings.
