One can see the abrupt transition to unanticipated (unwanted or unknown) attractors in multistable systems, especially when there are attractors with very small basins or previously unknown attractors. Catastrophic occurrences such as rapid climate change, deadly epidemics, financial crises, and malfunctions of commercial equipment can result from such a transition.
