Enteral Nutrition

Enteral nutrition (EN) is the most prevalent route of nutrition support. The essential criterion to provide EN is that the patient has a functioning gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The indications for EN may include inadequate oral intake, neurological disease, dysphagia, malnutrition, mechanical ventilation, and surgery to the upper GI tract preventing oral intake. There are many benefits to providing EN, and advantages compared with parenteral nutrition (PN) provision or not feeding patients at all.
