Clove Hitch

Applications

A clove hitch, also known as a builder’s knot, is a standard knot used in sailing. It’s employed for many common tasks on a film set such as attaching a rope to a pole or a stake.

Most often, I’ve used this hitch for tensioning guidelines when a large reflector or diffusion cloth is mounted on a 12′ × 12′ frame. The guidelines, usually attached to a fence or stake, hold down the frame in case a strong wind blows on the framed material. When the breeze catches it, a large cloth reflector acts essentially like a large sail.
