Understanding Virtual File Systems
The Solaris operating system has evolved a great deal, both to meet changes in technology and to address innovations in the support model for administrators. In Solaris, the engineers have paid particular attention to letting administrators observe their Solaris systems while keeping the intrusion to a minimum. One way they support that observability is through a variety of virtual file systems. Each of these systems exposes some aspect of internal operation as viewable files that the operating system itself maintains.
