Understanding Users and Groups
A user account is any valid entry that exists in the /etc/passwd file. The password for each entry is kept in the /etc/shadow file. If the user account is a role, that information is stored in the /etc/user_attr file.
Group data is stored in the /etc/group file. The GID extends a user’s permissions to files that belong to any group that user is a member of.
