In Chap. 4, we introduced the Hankel transform in our discussion of spherical wave reflection from an arbitrary horizontally stratified medium (cf. Sec. 4.8). In that context, we saw that the description of the acoustic field in terms of a two-dimensional, spatial/wavenumber Fourier transform in Cartesian coordinates was equivalent to a one-dimensional characterization in terms of the Hankel transform in cylindrical coordinates.
