12 PT-symmetric solitons

Chandroth P. Jisha and Alessandro Alberucci

12.1 Introduction

PT- symmetric systems have become a topic which has generated considerable research interest. PT-symmetric quantum mechanics originated after the work by Bender et al. [1, 2], who conjectured that Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian, required in quantum mechanics for the existence of real eigenvalues, can be replaced by PT symmetry, i.e., mirror reflection (parity operator P) and time inversion (time-inversion operator T) even though the Hamiltonian is not Hermitian. Bender et. al. [1, 3] made the connection between real eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian system and PT symmetry, thus paving the way for the development of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics.
