13.1 Introduction
In the middle of the 1800s, experiments demonstrated that light can travel through a curved stream of water or a curved glass rod by total internal reflection (Daniel Colladon in 1841, Jacques Babinet in 1842, John Tyndall in 1854). However, the first all-glass optical fiber which had a higher index core surrounded by a lower index cladding was realized almost one hundred years later.
