Background

In this section, we review the limits of capacity for fading environments, the channel model for multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and the concept of diversity. Each of these topics is needed to help in the understanding of the techniques used in antenna diversity. We begin with a treatment of capacity for fading environments. Foschini and Gans [20] have noted that OFDM systems are particularly well-suited for enhanced capacity using antenna diversity techniques. The report is summarized in the next section.
