Microsoft's Active Data Objects, or ADO, is the latest database technology that is available to the Office developer. An Office development project can also make use of earlier data access technologies, such as DAO and RDO, but there is never any reason to do this except for supporting a legacy project. ADO is significantly superior in both its power and its ease of use and is the clear choice for any new database projects. ADO is a part of Windows, not a part of Access. Therefore your Office custom solutions can use ADO for database manipulation without automating Access at all.
