Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Organizations and Policies

Introduction

In 1949, the Department of Defense (DoD) was designated an executive department with a single cabinet-level secretary for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force. According to the DoD Web site, the DoD is the nation’s largest employer, with 1.4 million men and women on active duty; 654,000 civilians; and another 1.2 million volunteers serving in the Guard and Reserve. The DoD also supports 2.0 million retirees and families that are receiving benefits (http://www.dod.mil/home/about-dod.html; April 2002).
