2.4. Operating Procedures of Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling

The drilling operation stage will begin after the drilling platform (ship) is towed to the well site and the anchors dropped in position. This section will introduce all the operating procedures of normal offshore drilling.

2.4.1. Before Drilling Operations

There are some preparations before offshore drilling.

2.4.1.1. Checking the Seafloor

Before offshore drilling, we should check the seafloor around 70 m of the wellhead and find out whether there are some barriers obstructing drilling. For floating drilling platforms or ships, we could use a ROV (Remote Operation Vessel) to dive into the seafloor and check by camera or sonar system.
